Mangaluru: Fed up with potholes on national highways that lead to frequent accidents, two social activists conducted a silent protest at Nanthoor Circle on Saturday, October 12.
Arjun Mascarenhas and Roopan Fernandes are the ones who staged the silent protest. It can be recalled that the same activists had protested against potholes near Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) a few days ago and urged the MCC officials to fill the potholes immediately.
After their protest on Saturday, they met with officials from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and submitted a memorandum.
Despite social activists (and other residents) demanding local officials to fill the potholes and repair the roads, the authorities and regional ministers are silent and unresponsive to the grievances of the public. There are several instances where motorists have lost their lives while trying to avoid potholes.
Speaking to the media, Roopan Fernandes and Arjun Mascarenhas said that their efforts are to simply draw the attention of the authorities over the poor condition of the highway. “As the pathetic condition of roads causes serious accidents, immediate steps should be undertaken by the concerned officials”, they stressed.
