Mangalore: The ugly face of the underworld seems to be attempting to rear its head and take the city into its clutches.

In a shocking incident, a shoot out took place on Friday evening in the Car street area and the shooters seemed to have missed their target.

Thugs mounted on bikes arrived at the M Sanjeev Shetty garment showroom at about 8.45 pm and opened fire. In the incident, a watchman named Mahalinga Naik was injured. The locals say that the target was the proprietor of the showroom, but the police are tight lipped about the same. However, as per police sources, the miscreants may have missed their target and this could be an extortion or haftaa case.

The proprietor of the showroom received a call from well known underworld don Ravi Poojary, 10 minutes before the incident. Threats had been made against his life on a few occasions earlier too, it is gathered.

The injured guard, Mahalinga Naik, is now recuperating at a hospital in the city.

City Police commissioner T R Suresh, accompanied by the investigating team, visited the showroom soon after the incident.

The Bunder police are investigating the matter further.
