Mangaluru: The Shiradi ghat road will be thrown open for the movement of buses from October 3, announced Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, on Monday, October 1.

Addressing the reporters at his office he said, “The police of Dakshina Kannada and Hassan district have already inspected the stretch and opined that the stretch can be opened for the traffic movement. Hence, all buses including multi-axle buses also will be allowed to ply on the stretch. Though passenger vehicles will be allowed, there is a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles like trucks. Traffic would be monitored for two weeks before taking a call on the entry of goods vehicles,” he added.

Senthil also informed that police would be deployed at four key places where the massive landslide occurred during the incessant rain recently. Meanwhile, police will also patrol the stretch to monitor the situation, he said.

Dredging will be undertaken at Thumbay vented dam

Informing about the shortage of sand in Dakshina Kannada district Senthil said, “dredging will be undertaken at the area of Thumbay vented dam and the extracted sand from the place will be used for the construction work in the district. There is also a plan to extract sand from those places where artificial flooding takes place,” he said and added that though there was over 50,000 metric tonne sand seized from the illegal sand minors, 80 percent of such sand will be used for the construction of government buildings only.

Senthil asked the public not to involve in sand mining saying that if a lorry is found extracting sand illegally, such lorry will be seized and it will not be released at any cost.
