Mangaluru: In order to make it convenient for the senior citizens to cast their votes, the district administration is planning to set up 10 separate polling booths in different areas in Dakshina Kannada district.
The Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Selvamani R told reporters on Friday, March 15, that it is a new experiment and the volunteers of National Cadet Corps (NCC) would be deployed at such polling booths in order to assist the senior citizens. Facilities like wheelchairs, walking sticks and walkers will be arranged at such polling booths", he said and added that there will be traditional polling booths, so as to help the differently abled people.
Informing about the various programmes to educate people about the importance of voting, Selvamani said, the cyclothon and walkathon programmes would be organised to create awareness on voting rights. Programmes like kite fest and sand sculpture will also be organised on March 23 and 24 at beaches in order to educate people", he said
Special attention on apartments
As the polling percentage would always be very less in the apartments, the district administration has planned to give more focus on this area." Mementos and shields would be given to those apartments which register 100 percent polling. Demonstration of VVPAT fitted EVMs will be held in certain areas like malls in order to educate the voters, Selvamani added.
