Mangaluru: The members of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) staged a protest against Yediyurappa led BJP government for cancelling ‘Tipu Jayanti’ and also questioned the government’s plan of withdrawing the cases of 2000 Hindu activists, on Friday, July 2.
Addressing the protesters, Dakshina Kannada district president of SDPI Athaulla Jokatte said, “though Chief Minister Yediyurappa had promised that he would never indulge in vindictive politics, soon after assuming power, he broke his promise and announced the cancellation of ‘Tipu Jayanti’. As Tipu Sultan was a great leader and he was famous for his administrative reforms, we need to commemorate him through celebrating his birthday. When Siddaramaiah government had started ‘Tipu Jayanti’, we demanded to name Mangaluru International Airport as Tipu Sultan Airport and to set up universities by his name, but, cancellation of Tipu Jayanthi was a big shock to us”.
Opposing the plans of the BJP government of withdrawing the cases of 2000 Hindu activists Athaulla said, “ if the BJP government favours the criminals who had indulged in heinous crimes, then how we would lead a peaceful life? If the government goes ahead with its decision, the SDPI will hold a severe protest in the coming days and it would question it in the court also, ” he said.
Leaders like Ismail Babbukatte, Akram Hassan, Ashraf Manchi among others were present.
