Mangaluru: The heavy rains that have been lashing the city for the past few weeks have resulted in the collapse of several compound walls, homes etc. On Saturday, September 19 morning, the incessant rains caused the compound wall of St Anthony’s School in Kulur to collapse, resulting in the death of a daily-wager who was working near the wall.

The deceased is identified as Umesh (38), a resident of Neermarga. He worked as a coolie.

According to sources, Umesh and two others were working near the school in the property of one Jagadish, when the school’s compound wall came crashing down.

Umesh, who was buried under the heavy mud and rocks, died on the spot. The police and fire personnel, who rushed to the spot, tried their best to rescue him, however, their efforts were in vain.

The two others were lucky to escape the debris unscathed.

It is believed that the wall collapsed due to the downpour of the past few days.

The Kavoor police have registered a case in this regard and have begun an investigation.
