Satellite call to Pak: UTK asks media not to publish news without evidence

Mangaluru: After rumours started doing the rounds that satellite calls were being made from Belthangady to Pakistan and that a person was arrested in this connection, MLA and former minister U T Khader pleaded with the media not to “play with the life of a person” for the purpose of breaking the news.

Khader convened a press conference along with Rauf of Manjanady, the man who has been accused of placing calls to Pakistan. Khader urged both the state and Central governments to provide clarification in the case.

“The media needs to clarify the source before publishing any kind of sensitive news and avoid creating confusion among the people. Abdul Rauf is an assistant religious teacher of Al Madeena Masjid at Manjanady and is unaware about this development. When his supposed arrest was reported, he received a series of calls from the police and public, even though he wasn’t aware of the issue. I have known Abdul Rauf for the past 15 years and I know that he would not be in such activities,” Khader stated.

He then pointed out to the clarification made by the Superintendent of Police of the Dakshina Kannada district Lakshmi Prasad that said that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) did not visit the district and that no instances of satellite calls being made from the district to Pakistan were recorded. He questioned the basis on which claims were being made that the NIA visited the district to check about the satellite call.

“The District Administration, Commissioner of Police and district Superintendent of Police are authorised to speak about this matter. They have not confirmed reports of any issue so far, so why is the media creating confusion in the minds of the people?” he asked.

Khader also said that if the media did have ‘credible sources’ to publish the sensitive news, they should reveal their ‘source’. “The media should not blame anybody or spread such news without the backing of proper evidence,” he said.

Expressing his displeasure over the issue, Rauf Manjanady said, “I have approached the Dakshina Kannada district Superintendent of Police and urged them to conduct a proper probe in this connection. My family members are now worried and saddened over the incident.”
