SAC to hold seminar on ‘Indian Secularism and Kannada Response’

Mangaluru: The Kannada Department of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) will be organising a state level seminar on ‘Indian Secularism and Kannada Response’ at Fr. Eric Mathias Hall on Monday, July 23.

Sri Prasanna Heggodu, a Gandhian thinker and proponent of Grama Swarajya, will be inaugurating the seminar and the rector of SAC, Rev Dr Dionysius Vaz SJ will preside over the function.

At a press meet here on Saturday, July 21, Dr Praveen Martis SJ, Principal of SAC said, “The modern concept of secularism is facing many challenges and distress in the Indian cultural context today. Hence, the debate about secularist, theoretical and political concepts is more relevant that ever before. The aim of the seminar is to discuss the perspectives on secularism of Mahatma Gandhi, Ambedkar, and Lohiya along with Ananthamoorthy, Lankesh and Devanur Mahadev’s ideas of secularism in the context of Kannada. This seminar will discuss a vision for Indians based on secular and democratic values,” he added.

He also informed that there would be two sessions held during the seminar. Prof. Nithyananda B Shetty, Director of DVG Kannada Adhyana Kendra, Tumkur University, Prof. Rajendra Chenny, Retd. Prof. of Kuvempu University, Sri G Rajasekar, Social Activist, and Professor B Shivaram Shetty, SVP Kannada Adhyana Kendra, Mangalore University will be the resources persons. “The University and College professors and students from different parts of Karnataka will take part in this seminar,” said Kannada Department HOD, Dr Sarswathi Kumari K.

Dr Dinesh Nayak Programme Co-ordinator, Assistant PRO of Aloysius were present.
