Puttur: A robbery took place on National Highway 75 at Shiradi Ghat stretch on Monday, April 11.
A family was returning from Bengaluru to Mangaluru in a Chevrolet Tavera when they were intercepted by a gang of robbers who came in a Mahindra Scorpio at 11:15 pm near Gundia border. The robbers forcibly took away cash and gold ornaments from the family after attacking them with sword and chilli powder and fled in their Scorpio towards Gundia.
Locals who came to know about the incident closed the border gate at Gundia using a bus to stop the gang. The robbers who came near the gate were shocked to see it closed and took a U-turn towards Sakleshpur injuring a few locals. The robbers drove till the river slope near Choudeshwari temple at Shiradi while being chased by the locals in vehicles. The robbers then vacated the car and fled. The locals chased and caught one of them while the other four gave the slip. Uppinangady and Sakleshpur police is hunting for the remaining four.
Sources said that the robbers belong to Bengaluru. The one person caught by locals has been identified as Basavaraja Byra Reddy from Chintamani.
Incidentally, one person was injured by the speeding Scorpio. He was identified as Umesh alias Mahesh (28). He was admitted to Puttur Government hospital.
The angry locals showed their ire on the robbers’ Scorpio by thoroughly damaging it.
As the locals had blocked the border gate, traffic in the ghat section came to a standstill for two hours. Sources said that the family which was attacked is based in a foreign country.
