Robbery: Five sentenced to 7 years imprisonment

Mangaluru: The Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court sentenced five persons to seven years imprisonment in an assault and robbery case, on Saturday, April 20.

The convicts are Irfan (39), Mohammed Musthafa (30), Sameer (27), Mohammed Irfan (35) and Dilhan Avinash Cardoza (28), all are the residents of Bantwal taluk. According to the charge sheet filed at the court, the accused barged into a garment shop owned by Kanayalal Gupta situated at Hampankatta on March 13, 2013. Later, they damaged the laptop and attacked against Kanayalal with a knife and iron rod. Later, they decamped with about Rs 28,500 from the shop.

Based on a complaint by Kanayalal, the then inspector of Mangaluru North police station Shantharam filed the charge sheet under IPC sections 143, 142, 148, 448, 323, 324, 427, 395 and 397. When the case came for hearing at the Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court, Judge Mallana Gowda upheld the arguments of public prosecutor Harishchandra Udyavar and sentenced the accused to seven years of rigorous imprisonment under IPC Section 397 (Robbery) and slapped a penalty of Rs 10,000 on each accused.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 5,500 to all the five accused under different IPC sections. The judge also ruled that of the total penalty amount, Rs 1 Lakh should be given as compensation to the victim Kanayalal.
