Mangaluru: ‘Freedom probably is a threat to life’ This was what Ilyas feared, as few TV reports have suggested that the rowdy-sheeter was reluctant to come out on bail. His worst fears came true, just three days after his release as he was hounded down by his assailants and brutally murdered at his own residence on Saturday morning.
Ilyas, being a rowdy sheeter with over 20 cases registered against him was bound to have made enemies in his course of business. Interestingly, while it’s suspected that he was murdered by his former business partners- Dawood and Safwan – turned foes, rumors also suggest that Ilyas may have been murdered to keep him from spilling any beans, considering his political links.
Despite having a criminal track record, Ilyas had been elected as vice-president of Congress, Ullal constituency, and had oft been spotted sharing the political stage with Food and Civil Supplies Minister U.T. Khader and Congress MLA from Mangalore city (North) B.A. Mohiuddin Bava. Pics of Ilyas with these ministers had gone viral on social media soon after the murder of Deepak Rao on January? 3 in the city.
In connection to Rao’s murder the police had arrested Pinky Nawaz, who is said to be associated with both Ilyas and Safwan (suspect in Ilyas murder), on the next day of the murder.
Was it merely a coincidence that a riot-like situation had erupted in the jail, when both Ilyas and Nawaz were lodged there, and wherein several inmates had been injured. Or was these riots, just a stage-drama to execute a murder within the jail?
While answers to these questions such as who, why, etc have to be figured out yet, the police it is learnt has formed three teams to nab the accused.
