Mangaluru: Because of a lack of interest, negligence and lack of knowledge, we are destroying the rich past, said well known historical researcher Dr. Pundikai Ganapayya Bhat.
Speaking as the chief guest in ‘Itihasa Parampare Ulisi’ program organized by the UG and PG history departments of University College Mangalore in association with Karnataka Itihasa Academy at Ravindra Kalabhavana of the college on Wednesday, 18th Septembber, he said “There are around 35,000 temples under Department of Archeology and Museums in Karnataka, including 2,000 in Tulunadu. But they are in danger because of urbanization, mechanization and blind beliefs. ‘Hampi of Tulunadu’ Barkur is completely neglected”.
Presiding over the function Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof. P. Yadapadithaya also opined that history and tradition are in danger and they are in the marginalized sector. “Let us study our history and our neighboring places. Students can also contribute in their way by documentation,” he said.
Principal Dr. Uday Kumar M A stressed the practical study of history. Neglecting the past can be suicidal, he expressed concern. Meanwhile, St. Agnes College Mangalore and Bhuvanedra College Karkala won prizes in a quiz and essay competition held as a part of the program.
