Mangaluru: St Francis Xavier Church, Bejai parishioners have urged the Union Government to rename the Mangaluru Junction Railway Station after the late George Fernandes, who was served as a Union Minister and famously contributed greatly towards the development of the Konkan Railway.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, parish priest Fr J B Saldanha urged the Mangaluru City Corporation to also rename the road between the Bejai Church Circle and the Corporation after the late former Union Minister.
January 29, 2021, will be the second death anniversary of George Fernandes and the call to rename the railway station and road after him is an attempt to commemorate him for his contributions to society and the country.

On the occasion, leaders from different communities will be identified and honoured by the parishioners.
Bishop Emeritus of the Mangalore Diocese Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, brother of George Fernandes Michael Fernandes, MCC Mayor Diwakar, and others will participate in the event, Fr Saldanha added.
