Mangaluru: Former MLA K Vijay Kumar Shetty has asked the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to remove all the major circles in the city, claiming that the huge size of circles itself is the root cause of traffic congestions.
After paying a visit to the important circles located in the city like Ladyhill, Bunts Hostel, Kadri, Mallikatte, Shivabhag, Agnes, Karavali circle in Kankanady, Nandigudda and Marnamikatta circle, he opined that MCC should immediately do away with all the big circles.
When he visited Kadri circle along with the journalists, a local woman Rosy Maria D'Silva backed Shetty saying that the unscientific circle at Kadri, Mallikatta caused a lot of inconvenience to the pedestrians and vehicular movement. "Instead of spending a huge amount of money on constructing such circles, money should be spent on basic necessities like drinking water, road connectivity among others", she stressed.
Vijay Kumar Shetty blamed MCC for spending a huge amount of Rs 91 Crore for the construction of clock-tower. "Though the old clock tower was demolished citing traffic congestion, what was the need to reconstruct clock tower here", he questioned. "It is simply a waste of money.", he claimed.
"All big circles should be demolished and a traffic police constable deployed during the peak hours of the day for traffic management. The names of the circle should not be changed. But, the structure of the circle should be removed to facilitate smooth flow of traffic. A memorandum will be submitted to MCC, District In-charge Minister U T Khader and Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy also", he said.
