Religious polarisation helped BJP secure more seats: MLC Ivan D’Souza

Mangaluru: MLC and Parliamentary Secretary Ivan D’Souza opined that religious polarisation helped the BJP emerge victorious in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, despite there being no developmental work.

Addressing the reporters at the district Congress office on Saturday, May 25, Ivan D’Souza said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had organised 142 public meetings in various parts of the country, wherein he never spoke about his previous assurance of ‘Acche Din’. As there was no developmental work to show, Modi and the other BJP leaders spoke about surgical strikes and Pakistan’s terrorist activities among others, which made the people trust them. Modi had highlighted the bravery of the Indian Air Force and other security forces as that of his own, which made the people to vote for the BJP.”

Congratulating all the elected MPs, Ivan said that he and his party will accept defeat even though the results pained them. “We have tried our level best to secure success but we failed in our attempt. When campaigned, the people expressed their anger about the Union government’s demonetisation and the BJP’s fake assurances. But, they did not support us when casting their votes,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, Ivan informed that their fight for the welfare of the country will continue. “The BJP should work for the people by utilising this opportunity. If there will be an injustice on the people, we will oppose and fight against it,” he stated.

We would have won more seats if we contested alone

Ivan admitted that if the Congress contested alone in the elections, they would have won more seats. “But, it was inevitable for us to go with the JDS as we have allied with them to form the coalition government in the state. However, there is no threat to the state government as claimed by the BJP. The coalition government will complete its full term,” he assured.
