Mangaluru: A nursery employee, who is a rape survivor, is in a serious condition after unknowingly consuming poisoned water offered by the accused.

The around 20-year-old woman is presently fighting for her life at the Wenlock Hospital. The incident took place in the Uppinangadi police jurisdiction on December 10, but came to light only after the victim’s condition turned worse.

The accused, 22-year-old Nagesh, is a daily wager and a resident of Kaukradi village. He was facing charges for raping a minor back in 2014 and was booked under the POSCO Act and the case is currently under trial in the court.

The victim, a cousin of the accused, became pregnant after the rape and gave birth to a child. Nagesh requested his cousin to meet him under the pretence that they needed to discuss their case with the officials at the police station. Once she reached, he asked her to withdraw her case, promising to marry her. When she refused, he offered her a drink from the bottle of water he was holding, which was poisoned. After unknowingly drinking some of the water, she returned to Kemmayi following which she began to suffer from acute stomach ache and began vomiting. She was admitted to a hospital after informing her employer of her condition.

She was soon moved to Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru after treatment failed to bring an improvement in her condition. Two days after she was moved to Wenlock, the slightly improved girl narrated the series of events to the police.

Based on her narrative, the police have registered a case against the accused and have booked him under IPC sections 307 and 328.
