Mangaluru: Condemning the Recruitment Rules 2017, which has restricted primary school teachers’ appointed before 2014 to teach only from classes 1 to 5, all primary school teachers organised a massive protest at Nehru Maidan on Tuesday, July 9.

The protesters participated in the protest by boycotting the classes. They also cautioned of boycotting the teachers’ day celebration on September 5 and holding ‘Vidhana Soudha Chalo’ protest, if their demands are not met. Assistant Teachers’ Association President Stany Tauro, addressing the protesters informed that the government has forced primary to go out on streets.

Aided school teachers president M K Manjanady informed that primary school teachers were demoted by the government after bringing in new rules, which is not acceptable. If no such rules exist in any other government department, why such rules are imposed only upon the primary school teachers?”, he questioned.

Prior to the protest meeting, a huge rally was taken out from Ambedkar Circle, wherein over 2000 teachers participated and shouted slogans, demanding to fulfil their demands. Though there was heavy rain, it did not hinder them from holding the protest.

After the protest meeting, a list of seven demands including extension of graduate-level pay scale for graduate primary school teachers, establishing pre-primary classes in all 46,000 Government Primary Schools across the State, revert to the old pension scheme instead of the National Pension Scheme, considering the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission among others addressed to the Chief Minister of Karnataka was handed over to the Deputy Commissioner of the district.
