Mangaluru: While many have been reeling under rising costs, there’s some good news for Mangalureans as the electricity rates are likely to be slashed starting January, 2020.
In pursuant of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) (Fuel Cost Adjustment Charges) Regulations, 2013, and considering the application filed by the MESCOM, the KERC has issued an order dated December 20, 2019, fixing the Fuel Adjustment Charges (FAC) to be collected from electricity consumers for the period of January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2020, at 7 paisa/unit. The previous FAC component was 14 paisa/unit.
Owing to this order, the MESCOM will now levy and collect FAC of 7 paisa/unit from January 1 till March 31 on a monthly basis, until further orders from the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission.
This reduction in the rates is not only limited to Mangaluru, but is also applicable to seven other districts in Karnataka. In a recent order by the KERC, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has been directed to slash its FAC by more than 50%. The previous FAC component was 29 paisa/unit, which has now been reduced to 12 paisa/unit. BESCOM facilitates the supply of electricity in eight districts of Karnataka – Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Davanagere, Tumakuru, Chitradurga and Ramanagara.
Sources from the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) told newskarnataka.com that the public utility body has already issued an advertisement in various media informing about the reduction of electricity charges owing to a slash in the FAC. This order is only valid from January to March. A revised FAC will be announced by the end of March and a new rate will be announced in the month of April.
