Puttur: Police fired two rounds in the air to thwart the weapon wielding cattle thieves during a raid at Kedila Sattikallu on the outskirts of the town in the wee hours of November 16.
While the police rescued 12 bovines and seized the vehicle used for transporting them during the operation, the attackers managed to flee the scene.
Acting on a definite tip-off the police team led by Sub-Inspector Ajay arrived near the residence of Mohammad Abbu of Kedila Sattikallu to nab the cattle thieves at 3 AM. The thieves had, by then loaded nine bovines into their vehicle (Bolero pick-up van bearing registration No KA-21, B-4023). On sighting the police, four members of the group started wielding dangerous weapons to threaten the raiding team. In response, the police fired two rounds in air. Sensing more danger, the thieves fled the scene in the cover of darkness. Reportedly, they were attempting to shift the stolen cattle to an abattoir in Mangalore.
