Mangaluru: In recognition of the selfless service of the Traffic Warden Squad, the police department has felicitated a total of nine traffic wardens at the Commissioner of Police’s office on Wednesday, December 4.

The traffic wardens who were felicitated are Mavis Rodrigues, Mary Pereira, Mohammed A K, Richard D’Souza, Sunil D’Souza, Boobanna, Joel Ashok Fernandes, Deenat D’Sa and Roshan Patrao. While Mavis Rodrigues is a coffee planter and the president of a co-operative society, Mary Pereira is a social worker. Sunil D’Souza is a painting contractor and also works as an insurance agent. Boobanna is an autorickshaw driver in the city and Deenat D’Sa works as a lecturer in Padua College. Roshan Patrao and Joel Ashok Fernandes are engaged in business and also participate in different social service activities. Even though these people are busy in their individual professions, they work as traffic wardens for nothing but self-satisfaction.

Felicitating the traffic wardens, Commissioner of Police Dr P S Harsha said that traffic management is a tough job and the police department has been striving hard to do the job. “Even though the Home Guards assist the police department in traffic management, they receive at least an honorarium for their service. However, traffic wardens voluntarily engage in this noble social service and help the police department, even though they get nothing but except self-satisfaction in return,” he said.

Pointing out to the service of traffic wardens in Bengaluru, Harsha said that those who are engaged in high profile jobs also prefer to work as traffic wardens in Bengaluru. “Compare to Bengaluru, the number of traffic wardens in Mangaluru is very less. People should voluntarily come forward to help the traffic police in this regard,” he said.

Joe Gonsalves (96), who has been working as a chief traffic warden in city since 2015, called upon all the other traffic wardens to inspire others to join the service. “All traffic wardens who were feted today, should take the responsibility of enrolling at least one traffic warden in the coming days,” he said. Later, Gonsalves was also felicitated on the occasion.

Meanwhile, two policemen, Krishna Kumar and Puttarama were felicitated for their commendable work.

DCP (Crime and Traffic) Lakshmi Ganesh, ACP Manjunath Shetty, entrepreneurs Michel D’Souza and Gilbert D’Souza were present.
