Mangaluru: The police on November 19, arrested a 20-year-old man who used to steal gold, cash and mobile phones in broad daylight in the city.
The accused has been identified as Lokesh Shettigar, a resident of Badaga Mijaru.
The police have confiscated one bike, gold ornaments worth of Rs 7 Lakh and 10 mobile phones from the accused.
According to the police, the accused initially started stealing mobile phones of cooli workers. Later, he started to steal gold and cash from the houses in the city. The accused had stolen gold ornaments and cash from the residences of Suresh Bhandary in Maroor, Sadhashiva Achary in Karinje, Vijay Kumar in Prantya, Dinesh Naik in Belvai and Kishor Kumar in Puttige. He used the stolen gold and cash for gambling.
Recently, he was caught red handed while he was making an effort to steal from a residence of one Suresh Poojary. But the accused attacked Suresh Poojary and managed to flee the spot. Later Suresh Poojary and Corporator Rajesh Kotekar informed police about the robbery attempt.
A case has been registered in Moodabidri Police Station
