Mangaluru: “A poet should have an eye for amazement and the imagination of a little child before write children’s poems. If not, any literature meant for children will not reach them,” said veteran poet Subraya Chokkady here on Saturday, August 3.
He was addressing the gathering at a programme called ‘Makkala Kavya – Hosa Dani’, organised jointly by Dharwad-based ‘Makkala Sahityasaktara Geleyara Balaga’ and the Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education at the Foundation’s auditorium in Bajjodi.
“Those who wish to write children’s poem should become like a child and feel the things that children feel before attempting to write a poem for them. I have written several poems for children, as I was a teacher for 39 years, however, I never published them. Poems that are written for children must reach them so that some feedback is received,” he said.
Lauding the poems written by Radhesh Tholpady, Chokkady said, “Tholpady’s poems have all the qualities required for a child’s mind to blossom in the right way. Measures should be taken by those concerned to ensure that they reach all the corners of the state,” he added.
On the occasion, Radhesh Tholpady read many of his poems, which were received well by the audience. He was also felicitated during the programme.
Retired director of the All India Radio (AIR), Mysuru Anand Patil and Sandesha College Principal Fr Jayaprakash D’Souza were among those present.
