Mangaluru: Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath informed that measures have been taken to ensure that there is no shortage of essential commodities during the lockdown, including rice and medicines.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, April 2, Kamath said that a meeting was convened with the wholesale dealers of the Central Market and Bunder areas to procure essential commodities for the public. “The people need not worry about a shortage of any commodities during the lockdown period,” he added.
He also said that measures were already taken to provide eight essential commodities like rice, dal, oil, sugar etc. to those who don’t have either an APL or a BPL card. A total of 3,900 people belonging to 993 families were provided with free ration. A total of 2,475 destitute were provided free lunch and dinner at the Kadri temple. “Lunch and dinner are also being provided to 413 people who are sheltered in hostels and schools,” he said.
Modi kit
Kamath also informed that a ‘Modi Kit’ is being provided to those who are financially poor. “A total of 50 ‘Modi Kits’ will be provided to each ward of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). The ‘Modi Kit’ comprises 5 kgs of rice, 1 kg sugar, half kg dal, paste, oil and soap. The package is worth a total of Rs 500,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kamath informed that all nine patients who tested positive for COVID-19 in the DK district, are recovering. The health department is awaiting the test result of 30 people who are being quarantined at the ESI hospital, he added.
