Sporting events have been already organized in states like Assam and Odisha for youths. Sports shall not be simply added in academics but should go hand-in-hand with academics. For this, the government has decided to organize different sporting events in schools, colleges, and universities in the coming days,” said Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.

Inaugurating the 80th All India Inter-University Athletic Championship 2019-20, organized jointly by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, (RGUHS) Karnataka and Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri at the Swarajya Maidan on Thursday, January 2, he said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi believed in me and gave me the sports ministry with the hope that I can improve and develop the sports field. In this regard, a blueprint has already been prepared to achieve the set goals.”

“The government is all set to provide the best infrastructural facilities to the sportsmen and sportswomen and help them and their families’ economic condition. People in the sports field are ‘stars’ to us and all academic institutions must put in sincere efforts to bring out such talents and encourage them. Sports have existed from the times of the Ramayan and Mahabharath. The legacy should continue even in ‘New India’ and become a people’s movement,” he added.

On the occasion, the Minister felicitated those athletes from Alva’s Institution who represented the college at the national and international levels. Athletes Satish Rai, Ashwini Akkunje, M R Poovamma, Mohan, Dharun Ayyaswamy were the students who were feted.

Manish Singh of the Mangalore University administered the oath to the athletes. The torch was handed over to Kiren Rijiju by the athletes from RGUHS.

State tourism minister C T Ravi, MLAs Raghupathi Bhat, and Umanath Kotian, former MLA Ramanath Rai, entrepreneur Prakash Shetty, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation Dr Mohan Alva, Alva’s management trustees Vivek Alva, Vinay Alva, and others were present.

More than 4500 athletes from over 350 universities participated in the march. A vibrant procession was carried out along with a display of firecrackers.
