Mangaluru: “We have to prepare the ground, prepare the officials and then implement the Ward committees,” said Akshy Sridhar, MCC Commissioner at the Webinar organised by Janaagraha, Centre for citizenship and democracy, to discuss the formation of the Ward committees and Area Sabhas. He opined that it should be a slow process since he wished for it to create an impact in the city.

He explained that the Ward committees would act as a platform that would help to identify the issues and grievances of the people. Akshy Sridhar responded to the questions asked by the panel and assured the people that this committee will be fully formed towards the end of this month.

“Before finalizing, we will give enough time for citizens to send in their objections, if they see that someone does not have the merit to be in that position or if someone with more merit deserves the place,” he said. He went on to explain that rounds of training are required to equip the selected members so that they will get used to the idea.

While mentioning some of the problems faced, he said, “since there are no criteria for selection, I cannot say that one person is better than another for the job and another problem lies in the shortage of staff.” He explained that as a corporation, they cannot hire people.

One of the panel members, Raghuram Rao, senior journalist, said that Mangaluru is one of the most progressive cities in Karnataka. “Mangaluru has a very good civic sense,” he said, “the corporates are very committed but this commitment does not reach the people in the ward. Hence an interface is needed and I believe that the ward committee can help to bind the people with the corporation.”

Kiran Kumar, Chairman of the Standing Committee of Finance said that the Ward committee will work towards the total development of the ward. “Since this platform is totally non-political, complete participation from the citizens of the ward are needed,” he said, “it is important to know how the selection process is done so that complete transparency can be maintained.”

Answering the queries of the citizens on the possibilities of digitalisation of records, Kiran said that it is very much possible but can only be implemented with the complete corporation of the people. “When we go digital, many problems can arise and the people need to be patient with us along the way,” he said.

Other members of the panel included Muneeb Bengre, Corporator, Bengre, Jaciantha Vijay Alfred, Corporator of Falnir and Former Mayor, Naveen D’Souza, Corporator, Bendoor and Samshad Aboobakar, Corporator, Katipalla North. Citizens and other representatives also participated in the discussion and asked questions which were answered by the official and member so the Janaagraha.

Srinivas Alavilli from Janaagraha said, “We will work together with the MCC to make sure that the implementation process of Ward committees takes place smoothly, which shall help to create a collective form of democracy to make Mangaluru better.”
