Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district administration disbursed compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the parents of the two kids who lost their lives after a retaining wall collapsed at Shivanagar near Padil, on Sunday evening.
Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath handed over the compensation amount to victims’ mother Rajani through the cheque, after paying visit to the house on Monday, September 9. Meanwhile, MLA Kamath has given Rs 1 lakh compensation to the family through his Sevanjali Trust. MLC Hareesh Kumar and Mangaluru Tahasildar Guruprasad were present.
Varshini (9) and Vedanth (7), children of Ramachandra and Rajani couple died in the tragic episode. The two were inside the house, preparing for the class test scheduled for Monday, while their parents were attending daily chores outside the house, when the incident took place.
The family was living on rent in the house owned by Mohini Jaya Shetty, against whom a negligence case stands registered. The retaining wall that collapsed was on the property owned by Shetty.
Mangaluru Tahshildar Guruprasad told newskarnataka.com that there are 20-25 houses in the vicinity which too may face the same consequence due to landslides in future. “Measures would be taken either to shift them to other location or provide them compensation,” he said.
