Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to demolish the entire Central Market building and construct a new building with modern facilities in its place.
Presently, the public has been denied entry into the Central Market and wholesale dealers of both vegetables and fruits have been asked to relocate to the APMC yard in Baikampady. These measures were enforced to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
However, both fruit and vegetable vendors have refused to move to the APMC yard. They have contended that the APMC yard is far from the city and that they will losses if they move.
The existing Central Market is essentially two old buildings in the area. In 2016, a decision was made to demolish the old buildings as they are in a dilapidated condition. The decision was taken during a council meeting and permission for the same was granted by the government in 2018. However, measures were not taken to either demolish the old buildings or to construct a new market building.
Hence, MCC Commissioner Shanady Ajith Kumar Hegde, on Tuesday, April 7, announced that measures would be taken to construct a new market. If the wholesale and retail dealers want to continue their business, they can relocate to the APMC yard in Baikampady and can approach the MCC for the same.
