Mangaluru: A staff nurse of K S Hegde Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte Nimmi Stephen has been conferred with ‘Florence Nightingale Award’, in recognition of her exemplary courage and presence of mind, shown while rescuing a college girl from a youth who was stabbing her.
It can be recalled that a 20-year-old MBA student from Bagambila was stabbed by a youth Sushanth from Shakthinagar with a kitchen knife near Deralakatte on June 28 evening. Even as onlookers stayed back and did nothing to prevent the tragic episode from unfurling, nurse Nimmi Stephen had plunged out of the ambulance and did what it took to save the girl. Though the youth, who was stabbing that college girl was brandishing the knife, Nimmi was the first person who approached him and succeeded to prevent him from stabbing the girl further.
Though many were busy in videographing the incident, they did not dare to stop the youth.
When the video went viral, many people appreciated the bravery of Nimmi Stephen. Though mediapersons attempted to contact Nimmi, she wished to remain unnoticed and informed that it was her duty to rescue any person who was in distress.

Now, she has been considered for the state-level ‘Florence Nightingale Award’ that is given to nurses with outstanding service in their profession. The award ceremony was held at Bengaluru a few days ago, wherein she received the award with other state awardees from union minister D V Sadananda Gowda and former Lokayukta Justice Santhosh Hegde.
