Mangaluru: As the stipend of house surgeons and post-graduation students of Kasturba Medical College (KMC) has been pending since the past 8 months, both house surgeons and post-graduation students would organise a protest at Wenlock Hospital on Monday, October 22.
A total of 51 house surgeons are pursuing one-year MBBS internship at Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru. They were admitted to the college under the government quota. In addition, 36 doctors pursuing their post-graduation at KMC are simultaneously serving at the district Wenlock hospital. Though they need to be paid a certain amount of stipend every month, they have not received the same from the past 8 months.
House surgeons have to get a monthly stipend of Rs 20,000 while the PG students should get Rs 30,000, Rs 35,000 and Rs 40,000 for the first, second and third year of their service respectively. Though the government has sanctioned Rs 2.36 crore for paying them, the Department of Medical Education has not released it yet, blames the post-graduation students.
A doctor who is in his second year of post-graduation, on condition of anonymity told Newskarnataka that he had not paid the EMI of his education loan as he has not been getting the stipend. Another post-graduation student said he did not pay his house rent.
A delegation of students has met Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and also Health and Family Welfare Minister Shivananda Patil and have given a memorandum and urged to release the stipend. “Though they have assured of taking measures to release the amount immediately, their promise proved false. If the government fails to meet our demand, we will intensify our protest by boycotting our service“, informed another post graduate student.
