Mangaluru: Though there was a demand from the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarathi Parishat (ABVP) and other student organisations to postpone the reopening of Pre-university colleges due to water crisis in Dakshina Kannada district, Deputy Commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil has said that there was no plan to postpone the date and that water would be supplied through tankers if any educational institution faces acute shortage of water.
Speaking to mediapersons at his office on Tuesday, May 21, Senthil said, “As per schedule, the PU colleges have already started classes from Monday, May 20. If any educational institution needs water, it can approach the district administration and measures will be taken using tankers.”
Informing about the storage of water in the Thumbe vented dam, Senthil said, “The water level in the Thumbe vented dam is at 3.42 metres and it is quite enough to be supplied to the people until June 10. Though some parts of the district have received good rainfall in the last two days, it has not helped the inflow in Nethravathi river. As the monsoon likely to arrive on June 6 as per the Meteorological Department forecast, we are hoping that the district may not face any water problem.”
Meanwhile, Senthil informed that dredging will be undertaken within the next four days to increase the storing capacity of Thumbe vented dam.
