Mangaluru: On the heels of reports of two suspected cases of Nipah in the city, the District Health Officer Dr. Ramakrishna Rao issued advisory to the medical fraternity as well as general public on May 22.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka, Dr. Rao said, “There is no reason to panic. The two patients are under observation as they displayed symptoms similar to Nipah infection. The blood samples have been sent for conclusive diagnosis to the KMC lab in Manipal.”

Typical symptoms of Nipah include fever, headache, drowsiness, disorientation and confusion. If not detected early, the patient may go into coma and possibly death.

Dr. Rao requested the general public not to panic. All efforts are being made to contain the disease, he said.

Further, Dr. Rao prescribed the following precautions to prevent contracting Nipah infection:

  1. People should avoid travelling to places where Nipah has been detected, unless necessary.
  2. People travelling to other places from Kerala and other infected areas should report immediately to the doctors or government hospital for treatment.
  3. Do not eat fruits half eaten by bats or any other animals. Even if you, do wash your hands properly.
  4. Maintain sanitary conditions at home. Wash hands before eating food or drink. Wash the fruits before consuming them.
  5. Do not consume toddy as it could be contaminated when left open on trees.
  6. People should not eat bats.
  7. Avoid eating fruits fallen from trees.

In his advise to the medical practitioners, private hospitals, nurses and other medical staff, he recommended the following:

  1. Any suspected Nipah case should be immediately reported to the DHO. The DHO will provide further guidance for effectively controlling the disease.
  2. The suspected patients should be isolated from public. For this, every hospital should keep isolation wards ready.
  3. All medical personnel, including cleaning staff, should wear fully protective gear such as masks, gloves, goggles, coverall and other safety equipment.
