Mangaluru: A new building act will soon be brought in place keeping in mind the need to boost construction of smart and green houses, said Minister for Urban Development and Housing U T Khader on Sunday, September 30.

He was addressing the gathering at a programme `Green Walkathon – 2018` organised by the Beary’s Institute of Technology (BIT) and Beary’s Enviro Architecture Design School (BEADS) at Town Hall.

Khader said that priority will be given on recycling water and solid waste management in the state. “Government is planning to make it compulsory to set up groundwater recharging pit and planting at least four saplings in a house,” he said.

Beary’s Group CMD Syed Mohammed Beary after inaugurating the programme said, “people should understand their responsibility and give importance to sustainable development to protect environmental balance. Priority should be given to environment-friendly buildings.”

Citing the examples of Kerala and Kodagu natural disasters he said, these two incidents are clear evidence of ill-treatment and exploitation of the environment. “Though development is needed, we should not exploit our natural resources beyond the limit,” he said.

Meanwhile, members of Ramakrishna Mission, Abdul Rahman of Anti-pollution Drive, snake conservator Suraj Mascarenhas, soilless green plantation builder Suraj Ajila, environmental activist Shashidhar Shetty, animal conservator Thouseef Ahmed, forest developer Abdul Kareem, environmental activist Madhava Ullal and Clean beach activist Yatheesh Baikampady were felicitated on the same occasion.

Dean (Academy) Dr Mahabaleshwarappa, BIT polytechnic principal Dr Azeez Musthafa, programme coordinator Prof Rukhiyat, BEADS principal Ashok Mendonza, BIT principal Dr Anthony AJ, Sheik Zaid and Afra Basheer were present.

Prior to the programme BEADS principal Ashok Mendonza flagged off the Green Walkathon at Mangala Stadium. Students from BIT, BEADS and other institutions participated in the Walkathon.
