Mangaluru: Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal (BD) organised a programme at the Town Hall here on June 11, where books and scholarships were distributed to students hailing from economically poor families. The members also distributed wheelchairs to the needy.
The event was inaugurated by M B Puranik, working president of the VHP, by lighting the traditional lamp along with the other dignitaries.
In his address to the gathering, Puranik said that those who do not like the VHP and BD say that they are involved in anti-social activities when in truth they are involved in humanitarian activities and will continue to do so.
“The VHP and BD have been distributing books and scholarships to the children of auto drivers and wheelchairs to those who are physically challenged, but they don’t get recognised for their good work,” he lamented.
He also brought up the protest against the education department for the inclusion of Christianity and Islam related chapters in the class 9th books. “Why have they not mentioned about Mahabaratha and Ramayana in the book? Why is there this discrimination?” he asked.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel also spoke on the occasion. He said that while many organisations engaged in social activities for publicity, the VHP and BD were in the service without expecting anything in return.
MLA Vedavyas Kamath, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Jagadish Shenava, Sharan Pumpwell, Gopal Kuthar and others were present for the programme.
There were as many as 500 beneficiaries of the programme.
