Mangaluru: The incessant rains that hit across parts of Mangaluru city and Udupi, reportedly due to a cyclonic effect claimed four lives on Tuesday. The heavy downpour accompanied by gusty winds led to flooding of several roads, uprooting of trees thus crippling normal life in the district.

As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi will observe a holiday today, May 30.The metrological department has predicted more rainfall today.

The district administration has kept NDRF teams on standby in order to respond to flood-related emergencies in coastal Karnataka.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday evening tweeted that he has asked the authorities to ensure all possible help to the affected areas in Karnataka. Chief Minister Kumaraswamy too has reviewed the flood situation in Mangaluru.

The heavy rain in the coast was due to well-marked low pressure over the south-east Arabian Sea, off the coast of Karnataka and north Kerala, and also due to the onset of monsoon in Kerala, the weather office has said.
