Mangaluru: National Commission for Women (NCW) member Shyamala Kunder informed that the NCW had filed a suo moto case against the culprits involved in the gang rape of a college student in Puttur and that it would take the entire responsibility of the victim student’s education.
Shyamala Kunder was in city on Monday, July 8 to gather information about the gang rape case and she approached Superintendent of Police Lakshmi Prasad in this regard. She also visited the victim’s house and the college she was studying. Later, Shyamala convened a press conference in the city.
“When I communicated with the victim and her mother, they confided that they were scared of the way the society would treat them. Hence, I have assured them that NCW would take arrange for her education outside the district and extend all help to achieve her goals in life. As the victim girl asked me to take appropriate measures to ensure severe punishment to those who raped her, NCW will do its best to get her justice”, she added.
Shyamala also informed that an interim compensation of Rs 4,12,250 will be provided to the victim soon from the social welfare department and another Rs 4 Lakh compensation from the Central Victim Compensation Fund (CVCF) scheme.
She said that she had already discussed with the SP to launch frequent raids upon the petty shops, adjacent to the schools and colleges where the students deposit their mobile phones before entering the campus. “As mobile phones derail the motives of the students, educational institutions should be very careful about them. Usually, parents take utmost care of their daughters and they track their every movement. However, they forget to do the same for their sons. Such attitude must be done away with as boys misuse their freedom”, she added.
