Mangaluru: The Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) is setting up a seawater desalination plant at an estimated cost of Rs 620 Crore will be completed by October, 2020, informed its managing director M Venkatesh.
Addressing the reporters here on Saturday, July 6 Venkatesh said, “In order to ease the pressure on water supply during the summer, MRPL had planned to set up a water desalination plant. If everything goes as per the plan, it would be complete by October 2020 and water will be available for the refinery in summer months too. This will allow MRPL to supply petroleum products even during the summer.”
Speaking about the water crisis this year, Venkatesh said, “Due to shortage of drinking water, MRPL had to shut down its production from April 16. But we never let people face the problem.”
Informing about the total turnover of the company he said, “The company had a turnover of Rs 72,283 Crore and a profit of Rs 332 Crore in the year 2018-18. MRPL is grateful for the positive response by its retail outlets. Last year, MRPL opened a new retail outlet in Gubbi in Tumkur. Encouraged by the trust reposed on us, MRPL is expanding its retail presence and plans to open 257 outlets in Karnataka and Kerala in the next couple of years.”
Responding to a query on the fourth phase of MRPL expansion, Venkatesh informed that the process of land acquisition was in progress and compensation had to be provided. MRPL would strictly follow the guidelines before going ahead with the fourth phase of expansion, he said.
