Mangaluru: Independent animal activist Tauseef Ahmed has launched a new project wherein artificial living spaces are created for birds using PVC pipes. Interestingly, Tauseef has labelled each of these nests with a sticker reading ‘Home Sweet Home’.

Tauseef came up with this idea after he found a few dead birds in electrical and AC boxes where he also found their nests. These birds had apparently died from electrocution.

Speaking to Newskarnataka.com, Tauseef said, “Recently, I came across a few dead birds in electrical and AC boxes, where they had built their nests. They had died from electrocution and their chicks were orphaned. This prompted me to build artificial nests for the birds.”

He added that his intention was to bring sparrows back to the city by providing them with safe nesting spaces through this project.

He has, so far, made 35 of such nests for distribution, each unit containing three nesting spaces. One unit measures 2.5 feet in length, the internal width of which is 4 inches. The units are waterproof and can easily last for over 25 years. According to Tauseef, the units are big enough for sparrows, robins and even squirrels to nest.

What makes this gesture even more generous is the fact that he is handing over these units out for free, although each unit has cost him about Rs 300 to build.

Tauseef has been working relentlessly to rescue animals in trouble in and around Mangaluru city. Even when he was in school, he showed an affinity towards animals as he would build nests for birds out of cardboard boxes. He has rescued over 9,000 animals including dogs, cats, cattle, reptiles, birds and others during his ten-year career as an animal activist.

‘Home Sweet Home’ to be on display at TEDx talk show

Tauseef Ahmed has been given an opportunity to deliver a TEDx talk (an international level talk-show), organised by K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte on September 29. These artificial nests – Home Sweet Home – will be displayed at the premises of K S Hegde Medical Academy, during his talk, in order to grab the attention of the people coming from different parts of the world.

“If even a few people are interested in keeping these nests in their balconies or parking lots and allow birds to live there, I will have succeeded in my efforts,” Tauseef added.
