Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district BJP has condemned the State Urban Development Minister U T Khader’s decision of modernising the slaughterhouse at a cost of Rs 15 Crore under the Smart City project.

Puttur MLA and Dakshina Kannada district BJP President Sanjeeva Matandoor told mediapersons at BJP office on Tuesday, October 9 that Khader had misused his powers by proposing the project of modernising the slaughterhouse under the Smart City project. “There are several urgent works to be taken up under the project. Why the minister is in a hurry on slaughterhouse, despite stolen cattle being killed at the same venue?”, he questioned.

“Though the Smart City Advisory Committee has been formed to give suggestions with regard to Smart City projects, it has not convened a meeting so far and taken opinions either from the elected representatives or the general public. Why has the advisory committee sidelined the BJP MLAs, while taking the important decision of earmarking fund for the modernisation of the slaughterhouse? Khader has decided to modernise the slaughterhouse only to please the minority community”, Sanjeeva Matandoor added.

Premananda Shetty, opposition party leader in MCC, who is also the nominated director of Mangaluru Smart City project said, “The board of directors advised that any new project must be initially approved by the corporation council and only thereafter, the same shall be placed before the Board for the approval. However, the decision of allocating fund for the modernisation of slaughterhouse has not been approved by the corporation council. Hence, we will oppose the decision of including the slaughterhouse modernisation project under Smart City project both in the advisory committee and the board of directors meetings, which are scheduled on October 12”, he said.

Mangaluru North MLA Dr. Y Bharath Shetty, Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath and other leaders like Brijesh Chouta, Sanjay Prabhu among others were present.
