M’luru’s Guru-Shishya duo lifts gold for India in Commonwealth championship

Mangaluru: A ‘Guru-Shishya’ duo from Mangaluru has bagged three gold medals in the Commonwealth Benchpress Powerlifting Championship, being held at St John’s Canada.

Pradeep Kumar Acharya, a resident of Urwastore has won a gold medal for the country in 83 kg senior division of Commonwealth Benchpress Powerlifting Championship held at St John’s in Canada on Tuesday, September 17. Taking a queue from Acharya, his student Rithvik Alevooraya K V bagged double gold in the 83 kg sub-junior category at the same event, on Wednesday, September 18.

Alevooraya is a student of Sahyadri College of Engineering, Mangaluru.

Pradeep registered a total lift of 210 kg and won gold medal. Tom Keen of Canada, who registered lift of 180 kg bagged a silver medal and another participant from Canada Rob Dyke won the bronze medal. Pradeep will be competing in another segment on Wednesday.

Pradeep has received training at Balanjaneya Gymnasium, under Ekalavya awardee Sathish Kumar Kudroli.  According to the sources, as many as 15 lifters from Karnataka could not participate in the Commonwealth Benchpress Powerlifting Championship and Pradeep dedicated his gold medal to them.

MLA Vedavyas Kamath and Commissioner of Police Dr P S Harsha congratulated  Pradeep Kumar Acharya for winning gold medal for the country. The tweet of Sr P S Harsha reads ” Congratulations to Kudlada Kuvara Pradeep Kumar Acharya for having won gold medal in Commonwealth Benchpress Powerlifting Championship. You have made all of us proud…urge youth to derive inspiration..”

Ruthvik Alevooraya has secured gold under ‘Equipped’ section and ‘Classic’ section of Benchpress powerlifting championship. Rithvik, son of Vasudeva Bhat Kunjathodi and Deepa has been pursuing his education at Sahyadri College of Engineering at Adyar.
