Essential services, grocery shops to remain open: Compol on lockdown confusion-1Mangaluru: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of a 21-day nation-wide lockdown starting March 24, midnight, a lot of people were witnessed rushing to the stores and purchasing essential items.

Taking to Twitter, Mangaluru City Commissioner of Police Dr P S Harsha clarified that there was no need to panic as essential services and grocery stores will not be shut down.

"There seems to be some confusion regarding essential services and grocery shops and other such daily requirements.. all such shops will remain open .. NO Need to panic..essential supplies and services will be unaffected..right now in DK district from 6am till 12noon, [sic]" he wrote.

The PM also clarified the same on Twitter.

"My fellow citizens, there is absolutely no need to panic. Essential commodities, medicines etc. would be available. Centre and various state governments will work in close coordination to ensure this. Together, we will fight COVID-19 and create a healthier India," PM wrote in a tweet.

He also urged the people not to crowd shops as it would increase the risk of the virus spreading further. He reiterated his direction to stay indoors and assured that the "Centre and State Governments will ensure all essentials are available".

PM Modi's appeal came after people across the country started thronging the shops to buy essential items in view of the nationwide three-week lockdown starting Tuesday midnight.
