Mangaluru: Hundreds of migrant labourers gathered in front of the Central Railway Station following rumours that the district administration has arranged for train services to sent them back to their native places on Friday, May 8.
While they gathered in front of the railway station, some of them neither maintained social distance nor wore masks. The Railway police had a tough time trying to convince them that no arrangements were made to transport them to their villages today.
Though the district administration had already transported some migrant labourers back to their hometowns, there are still hundreds of labourers, especially from north India, who are stranded here and are being sheltered at various places in the city like Surathkal, Kuloor, Nanthoor etc.
When the police asked them to disperse, they staged a protest holding posters that read “We want to go home”.
Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner Madan Mohan and Commissioner of Police Dr P S Harsha also came to the spot and assured the migrants that arrangements would be made to take them to their native places in two to three days.
The migrant labourers dispersed after receiving this assurance.
