Mangaluru: University College Mangaluru has made up to the top 200 colleges in the country, in recently released National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the National Human Resource Ministry.
St. Aloysius college of Mangalore has made up to the top 150 in the NIRF list. The University College Mangaluru has emerged as the only the second college in the district and one among six colleges in the state to achieve this memorable feat.
The University College Mangaluru, the second oldest government in the state, has celebrated the sesquicentennial (1868-2018) on 6th February 2020. Spread at around 7 acres of land in Hampanakatta, the heart of the city was considered as the constituent college of Mangalore University on March 7, 1993.
In 2016-17, University Grants Commission (UGC) had given heritage tags to 19 old colleges of the country to preserve their historical importance and University College Mangaluru was only from Karnataka to get that heritage tag. This reddish building which is also called ‘red fort’ attracts onlookers with its Indo-gothic style and Italian architecture.
NAAC ‘A’ grade, UGC recognition
UGC has recognized the college as College with Potential Excellence (CPE) in 2017-18 and released Rs.1.5 crore for various development works. This college, where more than 2000 students study, also earned ‘A’ grade from NAAC in 2016 for its quality education and infrastructure. The unique free mid-day meal scheme for eligible students was launched in 2016 with the help of teachers and donors, mainly the old students. More than 200 students are benefitted every year under this scheme.
“It should be noted that more than 65% of students of the college are girls. The NIRF recognition is a boost to this college, which is moving from a rich past towards a promising future. Including teaching and non-teaching staff, students, parents, and old students, each one of them contributed to this achievement. Thanks to all of them,” reacted the Principal.
