Mangaluru: Officials of the Karnataka Legal Metrology Department on Saturday raided various places in the city to ascertain if the benefits of the reduced GST on 178 items of daily use were being passed on to the consumer.
The GST Council had, with effect from 15th November 2017, slashed the GST on as many as 178 items of daily use from 28 per cent to 18 per cent. The raids touched shops and supermarkets including those in various malls. The raids were conducted at Big Bazar, Life Style, Everyday Super Market, and The Bodyshop.
Gajendra V Assitant Controller of the Legal Metrology Department, speaking to NewsKarnataka said, “Even after the government has slashed the GST on 78 products falling under the 28% and 18% tax slabs, a few retailers are still selling the products on MRP calculated at GST of 28% without changing the MRP of the products. And in some places instead of reducing the MRP from 28% to 18%. The product was sold with 10% discount offer. The reduced 10% GST should go to the people not the sellers”.
