Mangaluru: State Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader, on November 27, informed that the Karnataka Legal Metrology Department had raided and registered five cases under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 for selling products priced according to old GST rates, in the city.
Addressing a press meet at Circuit House, Khader said, “Goods and Services Tax is a good taxation system but the Union government has failed to implement it effectively. Despite the government having slashed the GST on 78 products falling under the 28% and 18% tax slabs, a few retailers are still selling the products on MRP calculated at a GST of 28% . Though it is mandatory that all traders should affix new stickers bearing the changed prices on the unsold pre-GST products, this is not being followed”.
He continued, “In some places, instead of reducing the MRP from 28% to 18%, the products were sold with a 10% discount offer. Hence, in such places, officials of the Karnataka Legal Metrology Department have registered a compoundable case against them.”
Slamming MP Shobha Karandlaje for criticising the chief minister for not displaying Dr. Ambedkar’s photos in the advertisement to mark the Constitutional Day, Khader said that CM Siddaramaiah’s government was working as per the aspirations of Dr. B R Ambedkar. He also said that the BJP had no issues to raise against the ruling Congress government hence, they brought up unnecessary issues.
He also said, “There is a saying that when it is the time to go down, people are at their wit’s end. This is what is happening to them. The PM and BJP leaders should learn from CM Siddaramaiah, how to run a good administration by upholding the constitutional values. The BJP is only trying to mislead the people.”
