Mangaluru: Karnataka Media Academy President M Siddaraju urged the journalists not to highlight unwanted news, but to give more importance to the issues which are needed for the people.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a workshop on media, organised by the district unit of Karnataka Journalists’ Union in association with University College, Hampankatta at Raveendra Kala Bhavan on Wednesday, January 16. He said, “Journalists should unearth truth the in order to ensure justice to the people. However, in order to receive TRP, the present media is indulged in publishing and telecasting fake and sensitive issues which do not benefit the common public”, he lamented.

Expressing his displeasure over the media which had concentrated more on I-T raids conducted on film actors instead of highlighting the literary fest at Dharwad recently, Siddaraju said, “Media has stepped into the wrong path on the pretext of giving breaking news to the public. As advertisements dominate in media houses, journalists are forced not to expose injustice”, he said.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel being the chief guest at the programme asked the mediapersons to safeguard the constitutional rights of the people. ” If a politician commits mistakes, it will be rectified by the media and judicial system. But, if media steps into the wrong path, there is no system to rectify the same”, he said and added that media should exercise its duty with more responsibility and accountability.

Karnataka Journalists’ Union President Narayan presided over the programme. Mangaluru University Registrar Prof. A M Khan, University College Principal Dr. Uday Kumar Irvattur, Backward Classes Federation President Naveenchandra D Suvarna, Karnataka Journalists Union District President Hareesh Bantwal among others were present.
