mayor mcc 29102020 005Mangaluru: The MCC has decided to disallow unsegregated waste arriving from outside the Corporation’s limits, such as the Gram Panchayats, to be dumped at the Pachanady landfill for at least three months.

Informing about the same, MCC Mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar said during a Council meeting that the Corporation has initiated steps to collect segregated waste at the source within its jurisdiction. “Unsegregated waste from Bantwal, Ullal, Kotekar and 15 Gram Panchayats will no longer be allowed to dump unsegregated waste at our landfill,” he added.

Agreeing with the Opposition’s statement that ULBs and gram panchayats cannot be told overnight to stop sending their waste to Pachanady, MCC Commissioner Akshy Sridhar said that as they are dependent on the Pachanady landfill, they should be given time to make arrangements to handle their solid waste. “These bodies must also clear their dues owed to the MCC for handling their waste, which is a flat rate of Rs 500/tonne,” he added.

Speaking at the meeting, MCC environment engineer Madhu Manohar said, “We will no longer accept mixed waste. After the incident at the Pachanady landfill, the MCC will have to stop processing waste from other ULBs and GPs sooner or later.”

Slamming the Corporation, leader of the Opposition in the Council Abdul Rauf said it was a matter of shame that the High Court had to censure it for tardiness when it comes to handling the landfill disaster. “Why did the MCC not initiate action against the officials who were responsible for the incident?” Rauf questioned to which the Commissioner replied that the MCC is in the process of complying with the HC’s direction.

To allegations that the funds under the Mangaluru Smart City Project are being misused, the Mayor assured that a meeting on the Smart City works will be convened soon.
