Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Corporation Mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar paid a surprise visit to a few meat stalls in the city on Wednesday, October 14, along with MCC health department officials after they received several complaints and heard rumours about the mixing of beef with mutton at meat stalls.

Owing to the complaints and rumours, the MCC has decided to bring the butchers from across the city under the scanner to check for mixing of meats.

There have been rumours floating that some meat sellers have been mixing mutton with beef in order to earn a quick buck. Beef is available at affordable rates of Rs 280 to Rs 300 per kg with bone, and from Rs 380 to Rs 400 without bone. Mutton, on the other hand, sells for over Rs 650 per kg.

Taking the matter seriously, the Mayor and MCC officials carried out a surprise check and asked the meat stall and slaughterhouse owners to produce their licenses and bills. The Mayor then directed the concerned officials to keep an eye out for illegal slaughtering and selling of meat.

Later, in his address to the media, the Mayor said, “We decided to take a look into the issue after receiving complaints that some butchers in the city are adulterating mutton and selling the same to hotels and restaurants. We will also take strict action against hoteliers if they are found to be selling adulterated meat and their trade licenses will be canceled. We will also take action against sellers supplying adulterated meat.”

During the surprice check, meat stalls and slaughterhouse owners were instructed to ensure that there is a seal on the meat that is being sold. They were also directed to maintain the bills for the same. The stalls and slaughterhouses will also be issued a notice containing the measures to be taken within their respective premises.
