Mangalore: Mayor Premananda Shetty has assured that the Mangalore City Corporation would support the development of the Tulu language and culture to the maximum extent.
He addressed the gathering at Ravindra Kalabhavana of University College Mangaluru after inaugurating the ‘Maayada madipu’ program organised by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Tulu Study Chair of Mangalore University, Tulu PG study centre, Lions Club Milagres, University Evening College here on Friday. Lions Milagres President Lokesh Shetty said that children can learn the language and culture only if parents speak Tulu.
Popular Tulu comedy artist Bhojaraj Vamanjoor appreciated Tulu programs being organised by the colleges in recent years. Mangalore University Syndicates Members Ramesh and Ravichandra PM assured of solving the problems being faced by the Tulu study chair of Mangalore University.
Earlier, in his introductory speech, Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Tulu Study Chair and Tulu PG study centre Convenor Dr Madhava M K said, “Every part of Tulunadu has cultural uniqueness. These programs are a part of introducing them to the new generation.” University College Mangaluru Principal Dr A. Harisha, Evening College Principal Dr Subhashini Shrivatsa, and other dignitaries were present.
Physically challenged progressive farmer of Uppinangady, Yadhav was felicitated on the occasion. Various cultural activities followed the stage function. Tulu PG students- Vijayalaxmi Kateel and Pradyuth Hegde mastered the ceremony.
Vijayalaxmi Prasad Rai, Member, Karnataka Tulu Academy:
“We, Tuluvas worship farming or farming equipment. We worship women, as well as land. We believe in ‘Sathya’ (as called by the ancestors) which protect us don’t need showiness. Our traditions are nothing but worship of nature, which are meaningful passages laid by the elders. Questioning those traditions is nothing but foolishness” Tulu culture doesn’t need showiness.
