Mangaluru to host National Masters Athletics Championships from Apr 12

Mangaluru: The city is all set to host a national level athletics tournament for the second time. The 38th National Masters Athletics Championship 2018 will be held from April 12 to April 15 at the Mangala Stadium.

The event, which is organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Masters Association in association with the Karnataka State Masters Athletics Association, has been recognised by the India Masters Athletics Federation.

In a press meet, the organizers of the event said that the selection of the team for the upcoming Asian Masters Athletics Championship would be based on the athletes’ performance in this meet.

Nearly 1600 athletes from 18 Indian states and 100 referees would be participating in the tournament. Karnataka, Maharastra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh and Assam have already registered their teams for the event. In the four-day meet, sports-persons aged 30 to 85 will also compete in different age categories.

The press release said that the championship would be inaugurated by the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S on April 12 at 9 AM. The Chancellor of Yenapoya (Deemed to be University) Y Abdulla Kunhi will be the chief guest and Mangaluru Police Commissioner T S Suresh will be the guest of honour for the inauguration. The inauguration will begin with a procession of the athletes starting from the Karavali Maidan to the Mangala Stadium.
