Mangaluru: The city welcomes its first-ever full-fledged Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Judo academy- Alpha Warrior on October 10 at 8 PM on the 6th floor of Bharath Mall, Bejai.
The class classes will be held throughout the week. There will be free trial classes till the month end for anybody intending to learn this martial art form. The academy aims to hold free self-defense classes for women, children and cops in the near future.
Jiu-Jitsu and Judo are not dependent on size, age or gender, and is an art that can be mastered with practice and discipline. Srikanth Kotian, founder, strength and conditioning coach of Alpha warrior said, “The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu requires very little strength and can be practised by anybody, from kids to the elderly and the obese. This art is suited for women and can be extensively used as self-defence. Our aim is to make people aware of the benefits of this martial art.”
''I personally have struggled a lot to learn. We are not even sure if we are learning it the right way under the right coach and no better than the sensei himself- Sensei Salomao Lima, who belongs to team cicero costa- which is one of the best in the world. This is why I thought of introducing Judo, an Olympic sport today, and Jiu-Jitsu, that soon may become an Olympic sport, in my hometown,'' he added.
Alpha academy has three coaches, Sensei Salomao, Srikanth Kotian and Dariyappa, a judo black belt from Bengaluru who will be teaching Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. Sensei Salomao Lima said, “Jiu-Jitsu is not for war, it is for peace. An offshoot of Judo, Jiu Jitsu was developed to improve health. Basically to make a stronger version of ourselves. It is used to defend or protect oneself. This does not require strength like other martial arts and can be practised by non-athletes and people with a small build. I will be in Mangaluru to teach this beautiful sport to one and all.''

The focus is on controlling opponents through techniques that force them to submit. This will also have other effects on an individual like making them more disciplined, confident, calm and clear.
